Asthma

What is it?

Asthma is a common respiratory condition.  The airways may tighten, partially close up and produce excess mucus, when triggered by viral or environmental factors.  This makes it hard to breathe in and even harder to breathe out.

What does it feel like and how does it affect people?

The symptoms are coughing, wheezing and breathlessness.  Asthma varies considerably in severity - some people only occasionally need simple brochodilator medicines in a puffer (inhaler), while others need to take daily medicines such as steroids.

How can physiotherapy help?

Physiotherapists can help people with asthma by helping them to breathe in a more relaxed way, which can help reduce some symptoms.  They can recommend breathing exercises, advise on physical activity and explain how to manage wheezing and other symptoms.

What else can I do?

  • Always take your medicine as prescribed
  • Keep active, unless you are feeling unwell
  • Use daily relaxation techniques.
