Diabetes
What is it?
Diabetes is a condition where the amount of glucose in the blood is too high, causing tissue damage. This happens when the pancreas cannot make enough insulin the keep blood glucose levels in the normal range. Diabetes can result in serious health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, nervous system disease, amputations, and skin and eye problems.
How can physiotherapy help?
Active management of your diabetes can lower your risk of developing other health problems. Management includes controlling your blood sugar (glucose), maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising. Physiotherapists can help you design a personal exercise programme, and help treat any complications. Regular physical activity can lower your need for medications, reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke and help manage glucose levels.
