Medial ligament sprain
What is it?
The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is the knee ligament on the inner side of the knee joint. It links the thigh and shin bones. Injury often occurs after an impact to the outside of the knee, stretching the MCL and potentially tearing it partially or completely.
What does it feel like and how does it affect people?
Symptoms can include mild to severe tenderness on the inside of the knee, swelling (although not in all cases), and mild to moderate "looseness" of the joint under pressure.
How can physiotherapy help?
Your physiotherapist will diagnose the problem, help reduce pain and swelling, restore mobility and improve strength and stability of the knee joint. Without balance and strength in the knee, activities such as running can become increasingly difficult without the knee "giving way". Your treatment will probably consist of manual therapy and a comprehensive exercise programme to gradually return you to full activity.
