Whiplash

What is it?

Whiplash is a common injury, often occuring in car accidents.  The soft tissues of the neck are sprained when the body is jolted backwards and forwards by a strong impact.

What does it feel like and how does it affect people?

You will have a stiff neck and/or back of the head, and headaches.  Some people also feel pain in the shoulder or between the shoulder blades.  Whiplash can also make you feel temporarily dizzy.

How can physiotherapy help?

Physiotherapists can help you manage the pain and recover your mobility.  Treatment will depend on how long it is since your injury.  Your visit might include manual therapy and/or acupuncture.  You will also be given exercises to do at home, advice on posture while sitting and sleeping (including information on pillows), and instructions on what activities to avoid.

What else can I do?

When you are first injured, apply ice to reduce inflammation.  Try to keep moving - it will aid your recovery.  Seek early advice from a healthcare professional.
